There are a few things that you should consider when
traveling with your pet(s).
- Respect the rights of others
Not everyone is a pet lover and what you
consider "cute" behavior might be annoying, or even
frightening to others. Keep you pet under control at all
times.
- Hotels & Motels
Some Hotels & Motels put pets and owners
in "smoking" rooms or less desirable locations. Be sure to
check when you make your room reservations. Sometimes there
is an additional charge or security deposit required.
It's not
a good idea, but if you have to leave your pet alone in your
room, notify the hotel clerk, leave plenty of water, and put
the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. Remember, some
animals will make a lot of noise, or can cause mischief,
when left alone for an extended length of time.
- Make it Easier to Clean Up after your Pet
Feed
your pet on a mat or outside. If you use a litter box, put
it in the bathroom. And, bring an old bed spread or sheet to
cover any furniture that your pet may claim as a bed.
Always
carry a plastic bag to "clean up" after your pet. No one
likes to find out "the hard way" that your pet had stopped
to leave a "souvenir".
- Leash Laws
Most cities and attractions have leash
laws. Michigan State Parks require that dogs be on a leash,
no longer than 6 feet, at all times. You can't ever leave
your dog unattended chained or leashed to a tree or post.
- Bring
Shot/Medication Records
Always bring your pet's shot records. Most kennels and pet
care facilities require "up-to-date" records before agreeing
to watch our pet or letting your pet "socialize". Just in
case your pet needs medical treatment, it would be a good
idea to have any medication records and your vet's phone
number for information about previous treatments.
- Pet
Identification
Make sure that your pet has up-to-date
identification. It's a good idea to include a phone number
of a friend or relative that can contact you if your pet is
found. Carry a current photo of your pet for additional
identification.
